Machado to Begin Rehab With Keys
FREDERICK, Md. -The Frederick Keys are pleased to announce that Orioles infielder Manny Machado will begin a minor league rehab assignment with the Keys on Friday night. The 21-year-old is expected to spend the entire weekend at Harry Grove Stadium, and is slated to play nine innings at third base on Friday. Machado is recovering from offseason surgery on his left knee.
An American League All-Star with Baltimore in 2013, the Florida native hit .283 with 14 home runs and 71 RBIs over 156 games with the O's last season. He also recorded 51 doubles, becoming the second player in MLB history to tally 50 or more two-baggers as a 20-year-old. In the field, Machado earned a Gold Glove Award, the first garnered by an Orioles third baseman since Brooks Robinson in 1975.
Selected by Baltimore with the third overall pick in the 2010 Draft, Machado played 63 games with Frederick in 2011. During that stretch, he hit .245 with five home runs and 26 RBIs. That season, Machado helped lead the Keys to their fourth Mills Cup Championship, and was named series MVP after posting four RBIs in the series-clinching win.
The Keys begin a seven-game homestand on Wednesday night when the Myrtle Beach Pelicans come to town. Right-hander Brady Wager (2-1, 2.65) makes the start for Frederick, and will be countered by right-hander Sam Wolff (2-1, 0.98).
