Get Your Javier Baez Bobblehead Tonight!
Fans will want to arrive early to the Smokies' game against the Huntsville Stars this evening, as the first 1,500 fans will receive a Javier Baez Bobblehead courtesy of U.S. Cellular. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. for this evening's game, with first pitch scheduled for 6:15 p.m. in Kodak.
Baez tore up the Southern League after arriving from the Daytona Cubs on June 28, smashing 20 homers and driving in 54 runs in 54 regular season contests, in addition to recording a .294 batting average (64-218). The shortstop totaled 37 longballs between the Smokies and D-Cubs in 2013, best all but one player in Minor League Baseball during that year.
The 21-year-old, who was voted a Southern League Post-Season All-Star at the conclusion of last season, not only electrified fans with his home runs, including a walk-off homer on August 17 against the Chattanooga Lookouts at Smokies Stadium, but also made stellar defensive plays in the field. The Florida native's diving catch in the ninth inning to preserve southpaw Eric Jokisch's no-hitter on August 6 against the Jacksonville Suns was one of the plays of the season.
Following the 2013 campaign, Baez was rated by Baseball America as the fifth-best prospect in all of baseball by the publication, in addition to the top Cubs farmhand. The infielder also burst out in Spring Training with the Chicago Cubs prior to this season, blasting five homers in 18 contests for the Cubs.
