Caughel Dominates in Blanking of Lancaster
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Lindsey Caughel's fantastic start led the way on Saturday in a 3-0 win over the Lancaster JetHawks. It was the second shutout of the year for Rancho Cucamonga.
Caughel (1-2, 4.13 ERA) was spectacular in seven shutout innings on the mound in front of 4,284 at LoanMart Field. He gave up just five hits while striking out five and walking one opposing batter. On the year, Caughel now has 22 strikeouts while walking just four. Seven innings matches Caughel's longest start of the year.
Adam Law led off the first inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. It was also the fifth straight game that Law led off the game with a hit. He leads Rancho Cucamonga with a .333 batting average.
Rancho Cucamonga (7-16) got on the board in the third inning. Rob Garvey hit a single with one out and stole second to move into scoring position. With two outs, Chris Jacobs roped a double over the head of Lancaster left fielder Dan Gulbransen to score Garvey.
The Quakes added a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Both were unearned thanks to a three-base error by Lancaster's Teoscar Hernandez that allowed Brandon Dixon to get aboard with no outs. Dixon came home to score on an infield single by Jose Capellan and Rancho took a 2-0 lead.
Rancho did not need a ball out of the infield to score another run in the inning. With two outs, James Baldwin successfully stole second base despite a pitch-out from Lancaster's Chris Devenski (1-3, 3.70 ERA). Baldwin took third without another pitch, as Devenski was looking down and nobody was covering the base. He scored on a perfectly placed bunt single by Adam Law to give Rancho a three-run advantage.
Lancaster (14-9) only mustered seven hits off of three Rancho Cucamonga pitchers and the JetHawks were kept off the scoreboard for the fourth time in 2014. Rob Rogers gave up one hit in a scoreless eighth inning, while Blake Smith picked up his first save of the year with a 14-pitch ninth.
The Quakes look to win the series Sunday afternoon as they host Lancaster at LoanMart Field. Tom Windle (1-2, 5.60 ERA) makes his fourth start of the year for Rancho, while Mike Hauschild (1-1, 3.86 ERA) gets the ball for Lancaster. First pitch is at 2:05 pm and the game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350.
