Meyer, Wings top Knights 1-0

April 28, 2014

Alex Meyer struck out 11 and picked up his first Triple-A win, leading the Red Wings to a 1-0 win over the Charlotte Knights Monday night at Frontier Field. The teams will finish the series with an 11:35 a.m. game Tuesday morning.

Fans can take advantage of the Fan 4-Pack at every Tuesday and Thursday game, with four tickets, four hot dogs, four soft drinks and a yearbook for $36 day of game. Plenty of parking spots for weekday games are available in the Kodak Plymouth Ave. Lot (Lot C).

Wings right-hander Meyer (1-0) was coming off of an 11-strikeout performance last Wednesday in Pawtucket, and recorded a pair of strikeouts in the first inning Monday night.

Charlotte's Dylan Axelrod, who spent the entire 2013 season in the big leagues with the White Sox, gave up a one-out double to Doug Bernier. A groundout moved Bernier to third, then Axelrod (1-3) walked Deibinson Romero to put two aboard with two out. Axelrod struck out Oswaldo Arcia on a checked swing to escape the jam.

Rochester struck first in the third inning. Danny Santana reached first base on an infield single. Two batters later, Chris Parmelee doubled Santana home, giving the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. The double extended Parmelee's hitting streak to 13 - the longest active streak in the International League. Axelrod avoided further damage after getting Deibinson Romero to fly out to left field.

Meyer had another outstanding start, striking out 11 for the second straight start. In his six innings Meyer allowed two singles and three walks, and hit one batter. He threw 100 pitches, 65 for strikes.

Axelrod was almost as impressive, limiting Rochester to three hits through six innings. He walked three and struck out seven.

Matt Hoffman took over for Meyer to start the seventh inning. Hoffman worked three perfect innings in his last outing April 24 at Pawtucket, and added a one-two-three inning Monday in the seventh - helped by nice defensive plays by James Beresford and Parmelee to retire Tyler Saladino.

The Knights had Gorkys Hernandez at second as the potential tying run with one out in the eighth against Hoffman. Andy Wilkins hit a squibber in front of the plate, and Wings catcher Dan Rohlfing pounced on the ball, looked Hernandez back to second, and threw out Wilkins for the second out. Matt Guerrier came out of the bullpen to face cleanup hitter Matt Davidson, and went to a full count before getting a flyball out to strand Hernandez and end the threat.

Guerrier retired the first three batters he faced, before issuing a two-out walk in the ninth. He got the final out to pick up a save and seal the win for Meyer.

The pitching staffs combined for 23 strikeouts.
