Martinez Excellent in Loss to Inland Empire
San Bernardino, CA - Despite six no-hit innings from Fabio Martinez, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes fell to the Inland Empire 66ers on Monday afternoon by a 3-2 score. Inland Empire won the game with just two hits.
It was the second time in 2014 that Martinez had success against Inland Empire. On April 7, he threw six innings without giving up a hit against the 66ers in a no-decision. On Monday, his numbers were very similar. Martinez gave up one run while walking five and striking out four batters.
Rancho Cucamonga (8-17) scored the first two runs of the game in the sixth inning. They loaded the bases with two outs, and Aaron Miller's single to right field scored James McDonald and Adam Law. It was the first game of 2014 for both Miller and McDonald.
Inland Empire answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning against Martinez. Andrew Ray drew a leadoff walk and then stole second base. After being sacrificed over to third, Ray scored on a groundout by Sherman Johnson.
Martinez left the game after six innings in line for his first win of the season, but Jharel Cotton (0-2, 12.00 ERA) allowed a pair of runs on a hit in the eighth inning. Ray led off the frame with a walk and moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Sherman Johnson launched a triple to right field to score Ray. Johnson scored on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Jose Rondon to give Inland Empire a 3-2 lead.
Kurt Spomer (2-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched two perfect innings in relief to get the win for Inland Empire. Rancho mustered just two runs on four hits in the afternoon. These two teams have split their first four meetings of 2014.
Rancho Cucamonga is back at it Tuesday night in San Bernardino. Chris Anderson (1-1, 3.65 ERA), who has given up just two runs in his last 11 innings, gets the ball for the Quakes opposite Inland Empire's Nate Smith (3-2, 4.22 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 and the game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350.
