Ports Bats Silent Again In 7-1 Loss

May 3, 2014

STOCKTON, Calif. - For a second straight game, the Stockton Ports recorded a season-low hit total. On Saturday night, the Ports scored one run on only two hits as they fell to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a count of 7-1 before a sellout crowd of 5,530 at Banner Island Ballpark.

After the Ports loaded the bases with two outs and failed to score in the first, the Quakes opened the second inning with four straight hits off Ports starter Josh Bowman (0-4). Chris Jacobs led off with a home run to right to open the scoring. Jonathan Garcia doubled, Steven Proscia singled and both runners scored on a two-run double by Aaron Miller to give the Quakes a 3-0 lead.

Stockton's lone run and final hit of the game came in the bottom of the third. With two outs and the bases empty, Matt Olson hit a home run to right to make it 3-1. It was the only run allowed by Quakes starter Fabio Martinez (1-1), who picked up the win after going seven innings and allowing two hits while walking four and striking out four.

The Quakes extended their lead in the fifth. With one on and two out, Proscia hit a two-run homer off Bowman to make it a 5-1 game. They were the final runs allowed by Bowman as he suffered the loss, going six innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out two.

Michael Ynoa came on to pitch the seventh and issued a one-out walk to Rob Garvey. Brandon Dixon followed with a two-run homer to left to make it a 7-1 contest. Ynoa would go on to walk back-to-back hitters before recording a strikeout of Garcia to end his outing. Nolan Sanburn came on from the bullpen and stranded both of Ynoa's runners. Ynoa allowed two runs on one hit while walking three and striking out two in two-thirds of an inning.

Sanburn pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for the Ports while allowing just one hit and striking out four.

Jharel Cotton pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game for the Quakes.

The Ports and Quakes wrap up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. Matt Buschmann (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his first start for Stockton, opposed by Rancho Cucamonga right-hander Chris Anderson (1-2, 3.65 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:09 p.m. PDT.
