Pitching dominates again in second-straight shutout of Chiefs

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Three Kernels combined for a 2-0 shutout of the Peoria Chiefs on Sunday afternoon as the Kernels took two of three games in the series. The Kernels won the final two games in the series without giving up a run to the Chiefs. The Kernels won Saturday night's game 3-0.

Ryan Eades (3-3) went the first five innings for the victory on the mound. Eades allowed only three hits while striking out five and walking two. Yorman Landa went three innings in relief and allowed only one hit while striking out four and walking none. Hudson Boyd pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save. The trio combined to allow only four hits.

Great defense shined for both sides in the first two innings with the Chiefs and Kernels infielders each turning a double-play.

Cedar Rapids plated the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning on a Jason Kanzler sacrifice fly to left field. Ivory Thomas crossed the plate on Kanzler's RBI after leading off the inning with a walk to put the Kernels on top 1-0.

The Kernels increased the edge to 2-0 in the bottom of the third. JD Williams led-off the frame with a single and was later brought in on a Chad Christensen fielder's choice hit to second base.

Peoria starter Rob Kaminsky (0-1) exited the ballgame after four innings on the mound, taking the loss. In his Chiefs-debut, Kaminsky gave up two runs, one of which was earned, on five hits while striking out two and walking two.

The Kernels begin a six-game road trip on Monday night against the Quad-Cities River Bandits at 7:00 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park. Following the three-game series with Quad-Cities, the Kernels play a three-game series at Wisconsin.

RHP Ethan Mildren (0-1, 2.50 ERA) gets the start for the Kernels on Monday night.

Cedar Rapids returns home on May 12 to face Peoria in a doubleheader at 5:05 p.m. The doubleheader features another Dollar Monday at the ballpark. Fans can get regular hot dogs, small popcorn, ice cream sandwiches, chips, and Cracker Jacks for $1 each on Monday home games.
