Bats and Payano shine in Winston-Salem
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (MAY 6, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, avenged their Monday night loss with an 11-2 thumping of the Winston-Salem Dash on Tuesday at BB&T Ballpark. The Pelicans scored six runs in the sixth inning and pitched a shutout until the ninth.
Victor Payano put together his best performance of the year. The left-handed pitcher gave up a leadoff triple in the first and a leadoff double in the second, but worked out of jams in both frames. He cruised after that. He struck out just three but walked two and scattered four hits over six innings of shutout ball. It was his longest outing of year, and he finished just one inning shy of his career high.
The Dash (11-18) kept the Pelicans (18-12) off of the scoreboard in the first two innings. Tony Bucciferro, the Winston-Salem starter, did not fair as well in the third. Hanser Alberto began the frame with a double down the left field line. After a bunt single by Chris Garia, one of three infield singles for him on the night, Odubel Herrera and Christopher Bostick both collected RBI singles to center field to give the Birds the early 2-0 lead.
Herrera scored Alberto again in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, and the Pelicans had a 3-0 lead entering the sixth. That's when the Pelicans bats exploded. They singled seven times off of Bucciferro and southpaw reliever Jefferson Olacio. They scored six runs and sent ten men to the plate before the Dash finally retired the side.
Will Lamb and Jason Knapp both tossed perfect innings, bridging the game to the ninth with the 9-0 in tact. Myrtle Beach added a pair of runs in the top half of the frame, extending the lead to 11-0.
Sam Stafford entered for the ninth to try and finish off the shutout. Stafford walked Courtney Hawkins, the leadoff man, on six pitches, and after a fielder's choice, surrendered an RBI single from Jason Coats, ending the shutout. Nick Basto plated a second run on a liner to left field, but that was all the Dash would get.
Payano (2-1) earned his second win, while Bucciferro (2-3) suffered the loss.
The Pelicans wrap up the series against the Dash on Wednesday morning at BB&T Ballpark at 11:00 a.m. Luis Parra (3-1, 5.54 ERA) takes the ball against Braulio Ortiz (0-2, 4.15 ERA).
