Bromberg, Bullpen Bully BayBears

David Bromberg fires five shutout innings with eight strikeouts for first win
May 7, 2014

Mobile, AL - David Bromberg and the Mississippi Braves bullpen twirled a tapestry on the mound on Tuesday night, one-hitting the Mobile BayBears en route to a 2-0 win at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Bromberg (1-2) retired the first eleven men he faced before giving up the lone Mobile hit of the game, a ground ball by David Peralta that found a hole on the left side. He finished the day with five innings, striking out eight and walking two for his first M-Braves win.

After Bromberg, Ryne Harper and Chasen Shreve each pitched a scoreless, hitless pair of innings to nail down the victory. Shreve earned his first double-A save.

The Braves (15-17) took the lead for good in the third inning. Mycal Jones led off the inning with a double and moved to third on an Emerson Landoni groundout. Elmer Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0.

In the third, Kyle Kubitza and David Rohm hit back-to-back singles with one out to set up a Barrett Kleinknecht sacrifice fly, making it 2-0. Rohm's knock extended his hit streak to a team-high nine games, while Kubitza finished the day with three hits.

In his double-A debut, BayBears hurler Sean Furney (0-1) allowed two runs on six hits over four innings of work, suffering the loss.

It was the first time in BayBears history that they've been held to one-hit twice in the same season over a full nine innings. The Huntsville's Brent Suter threw a one-hitter on April 23rd against the BayBears, a 4-1 Stars win.

It was also the second time the Braves one-hit the BayBears this year, last accomplishing the feat on April 7th in game one of a doubleheader, a 4-0 Braves win in seven innings.

The M-Braves will try for their third straight series win in Wednesday night's third game of five, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM CT. Right-hander Jason Hursh (1-2, 3.07) takes the hill for the Braves against Mobile left-hander Andrew Chafin (2-0, 1.23).
