Odubel Herrera returns to RoughRiders
FRISCO, TEXAS (MAY 12, 2014) - The Frisco RoughRiders, Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, begin an eight-game road trip with an altered roster on Monday. Infielder Odubel Herrera joins the team from Advanced-A Myrtle Beach in exchange for outfielder Chris Grayson. The RoughRiders also announce the departure of outfielder Jamie Jarmon to extended spring training and the release of catcher Zach Zaneski.
Herrera, 22, returns to the Metroplex where he played 101 games for the 'Riders in 2013. He batted .257 last season in Frisco and scored 37 runs on 100 hits, including 12 doubles, seven triples and two home runs. The 5-foot-11 200 pound left-handed hitter drove in 30 runs, walked 17 times and struck out 67 times. Herrera was transferred to Myrtle Beach on August 1, 2013 and began the 2014 campaign with the Pelicans as well.
The native of Venezuela hit .297 through 29 games in the Carolina League this season and leads the league in several offensive categories. At the time of his transfer to Frisco, Herrera ranks second in the Carolina League in walks (23), fourth in runs scored (26) and third in on-base percentage (.412).
Grayson, 24, returns to Myrtle Beach for his third stint with the Pelicans. He spent the entire 2013 season in the Carolina League and also played 27 games with Myrtle Beach in 2012. Through 112 games with the team last year, the native of Louisiana hit .199 and scored 52 runs on 74 hits, including 18 doubles, three triples and four home runs. He drove in 28 runs, walked 51 times and struck out 71 times.
Through 18 games with the 'Riders in 2014, Grayson played two games in left field, eight games in center, six games in right and served as the designated hitter twice. The 6-foot 190 pound left-handed hitter batted .258 with eight runs, five doubles, ten RBI, ten walks and 14 strikeouts.
Jarmon, 19, returns to extended spring training without making an appearance for the RoughRiders. The 6-foot-1 193 pound right-handed hitter joined the team from extended spring training on May 8.
Zaneski, 27, leaves the organization where he had played since the 2008 season. The 6-foot-2 210 pound backstop played in 351 games with seven different Rangers affiliates. He spent parts of the last three seasons with the RoughRiders, but spent much of the 2014 campaign on the disabled list. The native of Connecticut did not record a base hit this season in ten at-bats.
The RoughRiders' roster now stands at 24 members, one below the Texas League limit of 25.
Frisco embarks on an eight-game road trip that begins on Monday night in Midland at 6:30 p.m. The team returns to Dr Pepper Ballpark on Wednesday, May 21 to welcome the Tulsa Drillers at 7:05 p.m.
