Former Senator Cliff Lee dominates the Yanks in Game 1

October 29, 2009
Former Senator Cliff Lee opened the 2009 World Series with a complete game 6-1 win over the New York Yankees to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the series.

Lee, who pitched for the Senators in 2002, struck out ten without walking a batter in the first World Series complete game since Josh Beckett threw one against the Yankees in Game 6 of the 2003 World Series. He was also the third pitcher in World Series history to have no walks and 10 strikeouts in a game.

He was originally selected in the 4th round of the 2000 draft by the Montreal Expos. He began his professional career with Cape Fear in 2000 before moving on to Jupiter in 2001. With Jupiter he went 6-7 with a 2.79 ERA earning him a promotion to Harrisburg in 2002.

He made 15 starts with the Sens, going 7-2 with a 3.23 ERA before being dealt to the Cleveland Indians along with INF Brandon Phillips, OF Grady Sizemore, and INF Lee Stevens for RHP Bartolo Colon on June 27, 2002.

In just six full seasons, the 30 year-old left-hander from Benton, AR has a 20-win season (2008), American League Cy Young Award (2008), was the 2008 American League Comeback Player of the Year, and was an American League All-Star last season.
