Correa dazzles as 'Hawks win marathon

Shortstop gets it done with glove, bat in four-hour game at Rancho
May 17, 2014

LANCASTER, Calif. - While it's hard to quantify and won't show up in the box score, Carlos Correa almost certainly had a historic defensive night for the JetHawks in a 14-7 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

The shortstop dazzled the Quakes crowd with numerous great plays including four tremendous plays to help the JetHawks stay in the game in a come-from-behind win.

The Quakes jumped out to a 6-1 lead against starter Gonzalo Sanudo and reliever J.D. Osborne (2-1) before Lancaster got back in the game in the fifth.

Roberto Peña hit a two-run homer off reliever Geoff Brown (1-2) to cut the lead to two. The home run was Peña's second in as may days.

Jordan Scott and Tony Kemp followed with singles before Teoscar Hernandez hit one over the centerfield wall to tie the game 6-6. The home run gave Hernandez three of a season-high five RBIs on the night.

Carlos Correa followed by reaching on an error and Rio Ruiz walked before Brown was removed from the game. His replacement was greeted by a two-run double off the bat of Bobby Borchering to put the JetHawks up for good. Borchering would finish with four RBIs and was a home run shy of the cycle. He tripled in the ninth.

Jamaine Cotton attempted to hold on to the lead and got help from Correa at shortstop. With two on and one out in the sixth, Chris Jacobs lined a ball up the middle that was headed for centerfield. Correa dived to his left and snagged the ball while airborne to rob him.

Correa singled and scored in the seventh and drove in two runs with a base-hit in the ninth inning.

Lancaster scored five runs in the ninth to put the game away.

Kemp led the way with four hits, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Hernadnez, Correa, Borchering, Peña and Scott all had multi-hit games as the JetHawks pounded out 17 hits as a team while scoring a season-high 14 runs.

The game took exactly four hours to complete.

The JetHawks (25-17) moved into sole possession of first place with a Lake Elsinore loss. They take on the Quakes (19-23) on Saturday night at LoanMart Field. Kent Emanuel will start against Jharel Cotton. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
