Florida State League Hall of Fame.
Carter, a 2003 inductee into baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., told FSL president Chuck Murphy that he is planning to attend the ceremony.
"We're very excited that Gary will be able to join us for our inaugural induction," Murphy said. "Gary's a great guy and as we all know, he's already in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. We're looking forward to hearing what he has to say."
Carter is the first former player to confirm his attendance. The 11-time National League all-star played in the FSL for the West Palm Beach Expos in 1972 and went on to a 19-year major-league career mostly with the Montreal Expos and New York Mets. He also managed the St. Lucie Mets to the league championship in 2006 when he was named the FSL Manager of the Year.
The inaugural induction class of 20 includes 14 former players, all of whom are enshrined in Cooperstown. The list also includes New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, retired Major League umpire Harry Wendelstedt of Ormond Beach and current big-league umpire Phil Cuzzi.
Wendelstedt and Cuzzi also have confirmed that they will attend the festivities, which are open to the public. Tickets are $75 per person and include the cash-bar cocktail hour prior to dinner. Call the FSL office at 386-252-7479 for tickets and additional information.
