May, Thompson blank Hens
Oswaldo Arcia's three-run homer was the big hit, as Trevor May and the Red Wings blanked the Toledo Mud Hens 4-0 Monday night at Frontier Field. The Wings have now won seven games in a row, and 10 in a row at home.
The series and homestand concludes Tuesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m., with plenty of parking available in the Kodak Plymouth Ave. Lot (Lot C). Fans can take advantage of the Fan 4-Pack with four tickets, four hot dogs, four soft drinks and a yearbook.
On paper, Monday shaped up to be a pitcher's duel between Wings starter May and Toledo's Blaine Hardy. May was coming off a rain-shortened, six inning complete game shutout May 13 here, while Hardy had not allowed a run and struck out 12 in his last 12 innings of work.
May needed just 11 pitches to dispatch the Hens in the top of the first, getting help from Josh Willingham. The Twins outfielder, here on a rehab assignment, made a diving catch to take away a hit by Hernan Perez for the second out of the inning.
Hardy needed only seven pitches to retire the Wings in order in their half of the first inning. He continued in similar fashion, facing the minimum over the second and third innings as well. In the bottom half of the third, he struck out three in a row, bringing his strikeout total to five.
Hernan Perez singled to lead off the fourth inning for the Hens before Tyler Collins popped up to center field for the first out. May then struck out Mike Hessman as catcher Eric Fryer threw to James Beresford to catch Collins attempting to steal second, retiring the side.
Chris Rahl and Beresford both got on base to start the Wings half of the fourth. Arcia then knocked one out of the park to bring Rahl and Beresford home and give the Wings a 3-0 lead. Arcia's homer was his fourth in the current homestand and extended the team's home run streak to five straight games.
Hardy (1-2) walked Fryer in the bottom of the fifth before Pedro Florimon singled to advance Fryer to second. Rahl then grounded a pitch to second base to force out Florimon. Beresford stepped up to the plate next and popped one into right field for a double, bringing Fryer home and extending the Wings' advantage to 4-0.
With two outs, Ezequiel Carrera tripled off May in the top of the sixth, moving the Hens into scoring position for the first time in the game. May then walked Perez and Collins to load the bases. Hessman popped a foul towards the Red Wings dugout and Brad Nelson was there to make the catch, stranding all three runners and keeping Toledo scoreless.
After Deibinson Romero doubled to lead off the Wings' half of the sixth, Hardy was replaced on the mound by Justin Miller. In 5+ innings of work, Hardy struck out six, gave up seven hits and four runs, and threw 76 pitches, 57 for strikes.
Miller proceeded to strike out the first three batters he faced, before Chad Smith took over pitching for the Hens in the bottom of the seventh.
May (3-3) walked Luis Exposito to open the eighth inning. Perez and Collins both hit singles, bringing Hessman up with the bases loaded and two outs again. This time, Hessman grounded out to Florimon, who threw to Nelson at first for the final out of the inning.
This was May's longest outing of the season, working eight innings and scattering four hits. He walked four, and struck out six. May lowered his season earned run average to 3.35.
Aaron Thompson came on to pitch the ninth inning, striking out two in a perfect ninth.

This Day in Red Wings History
1990- Rochester catcher Chris Hoiles went 2-for-4 in the Wings' 10-2 victory over Indianapolis, raising his International League leading batting average to .380. However, Hoiles had to receive sixteen stitches over his left eye after being hit in the face by a pitch in the eighth inning. The win was also pitcher Ben McDonald's first in AAA, as he pitched six shut out innings.
This Day in IL Baseball History
1998 - Pete Rose, Jr. crushes the first pitch of the 5th inning over the left field wall in a game at Pawtucket, starting a rally of historic proportions for the Indianapolis Indians. The 10-run inning also includes a two-run homer by Guillermo Garcia, a three-run homer by Jason Williams, and a grand slam by Glenn Murray. Historians believe it is the first time in professional baseball history that a team "homered for the cycle" in a single inning. The 5th-inning outburst carries the Tribe to an
11-4 triumph and helps pitcher Jesus Martinez earn the victory in front of his older brother Pedro, who made the trip down from Boston before making the start later that night at Fenway Park.
