Former Cub Lifts Express to Walk-Off Win
Round Rock, TX - Brad Snyder led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run to right-center field, giving the Round Rock Express (23-21) a 2-1 win over the Iowa Cubs (22-20) at Dell Diamond tonight. The Express have won consecutive games and lead this extended series 4-2.
Snyder scored both of the Express runs in the game, drawing a walk and scoring on a double by Jared Hoying that tied the game at one in the seventh inning. The game-winning homer came against RH Alberto Cabrera (3-1), who had just entered the game. Snyder hit 50 home runs for the I-Cubs from 2009-11 and has hit seven home runs in 27 games against Iowa over the last three seasons. Tonight's home run was his second walk-off homer against the Cubs. He hit a three-run shot off Rafael Dolis to lift Oklahoma City to a 4-3 victory on June 5, 2012. He has four homers in nine games against the Cubs this season.
RH Carlos Pimentel started for the Cubs in place of Kyle Hendricks, who had to miss his turn due to a sprained ankle. Pimentel retired the first nine batters that he faced and allowed just two hits while striking out six in six shutout innings for his third quality start of the year. RH Frank Batista faced five batters in the seventh and walked two before giving up the RBI double to Hoying. Following the double, he intentionally walked Brett Nicholas to load the bases before giving way to Marcus Hatley. Hatley got Josh Wilson to ground into an inning-ending double play and has stranded eight of 11 inherited runners for the year.
The Cubs scored their lone run on a homer by C Luis Flores leading off the top of the fifth against Express starter Joe Saunders. It was Flores' first home run of the season. Saunders scattered eight hits and two walks over seven innings thanks to a lot of help from his defense. The Express turned three double plays behind him and a fourth to help RH Cory Burns escape a jam in the eighth. RH Miles Mikolas (1-0) pitched the top of the ninth inning for the Express and was credited with the win.
The Cubs and and Express continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Dell Diamond. LH Eric Jokisch (2-4, 4.37) will start for the Cubs against LH Ryan Feierabend (5-3, 4.18) for the Express. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
