Celebrate Memorial Day at Victory Field

Tribe to Celebrate Holiday with Fireworks & Camouflage Jerseys
May 22, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS - Treat yourself to an afternoon of America's Pastime on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, as the Indianapolis Indians host their annual celebration to commemorate the holiday honoring our nation's fallen combatants. Victory Field's gates will open at 4:30 p.m. for a special 6:05 p.m. game time, and holiday festivities will include game-worn, camouflage jerseys, courtesy of the Indiana National Guard, and a fantastic postgame fireworks show.

During Monday's contest, fans will have the opportunity to bid on the camouflage jerseys worn by their favorite Indians players and coaches. Proceeds from these one-of-a-kind Memorial Day jerseys will be donated to fund WGU Indiana scholarships for Indiana National Guard members.

"Memorial Day is a day to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country," Brig. Gen. Wayne Black said. "We honor the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen who have given their lives for the cause of freedom and American ideals. The Indiana National Guard is grateful to Hoosiers and Americans everywhere for their continued support over the past decade of war and for taking the time to honor Indiana's fallen heroes this Memorial Day. We recognize and appreciate the patriotism and support of the Indianapolis Indians and WGU Indiana as they wear ACU (Army Combat Uniform) jerseys to raise scholarship funds for Hoosier Soldiers and their families."

WGU Indiana is the state's nonprofit, online university established by the State of Indiana to expand access to higher education for Indiana residents. Using a competency-based model that allows students to proceed at their own pace and curriculum developed with input from leading employers, WGU Indiana offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Business, Education, Information Technology and Healthcare Professions, including Nursing. In 2012, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education recognized WGU Indiana in its Reaching Higher, Achieving More agenda for its excellence in academic quality. The university was also recognized as one of Fast Company's 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2013.

"With more than 200 veteran students and alumni, we're happy to partner with the National Guard in the Indianapolis Indians Memorial Day game sponsorship," WGU Indiana Chancellor Allison Barber said. "We not only praise the many sacrifices of our veterans, but also support them in their efforts to pursue their degree through scholarships and our online, competency-based model that fits their busy lifestyles."

In addition to the jersey auction, Memorial Day festivities will also include the popular Monday Dollar Menu, where fans can enjoy ballpark favorites hot dogs, Cracker Jack, peanuts, popcorn and potato chips for the discounted price of just $1 each, and an exciting, postgame fireworks show to cap off the grand celebration.

Monday's Memorial Day events are just the beginning of the Tribe's upcoming, eight-game homestand. Along with the holiday celebration, the Indians will also treat fans to a full slate of regularly-scheduled promotions during their series against the Buffalo Bisons (May 26-29), Triple-A Affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (May 30 - June 2), Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
