Vogt's Big Day Helps Cats Topple 51s, 6-5
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Stephen Vogt went 2-for-4 with two runs, four RBI, a triple, and a home run to lead the River Cats past the Las Vegas 51s on Saturday night at Cashman field by a score of 6-5.
The Las Vegas 51s, who own the Pacific Coast League's best record (32-16), scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before extending their lead to three with a two-run fifth inning. Sacramento took the lead for the first time with a four-run outburst in the top of the sixth highlighted by a two-run triple from Vogt.
The 51s tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled-home Andrew Brown to lead off the frame. After Las Vegas took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Vogt put the River Cats ahead for the final time with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth. Sacramento manager Steve Scarsone called upon Jeremy McBryde in the bottom of the ninth to close out the save for the second night in a row, sealing his club's 6-5 win over the 51s.
Nick Buss finished 2-for-3 with a run and a double, while Andy Parrino went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI of his own. Fernando Nieve was credited with the win, giving up one run in two innings of work, while starter Marcus Walden took a no-decision after giving up four earned runs on six hits and four walks with one strikeout in five innings of work.
Righty Logan Verrett took a no-decision after giving up four runs-two earned-on five hits and zero walks with zero strikeouts in six innings. Buddy Carlyle was tagged with a blown save and a loss, giving up one earned run in 1.2 innings on two hits and four strikeouts.
Dan Straily (1-0, 5.25 ERA) will start opposite Las Vegas righty Joel Carreno (1-0, 5.32 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night at Cashman Field.
Sacramento returns to Raley Field on Toyota Family Value Tuesday, May 27 to face the Albuquerque Isotopes for a four-game set.
