Asencio Awarded Player of the Week Honors

May 26, 2014

The San Antonio Missions are proud to announce that Yeison Asencio was named Texas League Player of the Week for May 19-25.

In his six games for the Missions this past week, Asencio hit .500 (12-for-24) with two doubles, two homers, five RBI and four runs scored. For the week, Yeison ranked first in the TL in hits, total bases with 20 and SLG at .833, while tying for the lead in extra-base hits with four. Asencio also was in the top three in AVG, OPS at 1.333, homers, RBI and doubles.

On Friday, May 23 at Northwest Arkansas, Asencio led San Antonio to a 12-0 win with one of the most impressive performances in MiLB this season. The outfielder finished the contest 5-for-6 with a career-high, tying two homers, a career-high five RBI and a season-high three runs scored. The five-hit effort matched a career high set in late July of 2012 when Asencio was playing for Class A Fort Wayne of the Midwest League. Asencio had entered Friday's game with just five RBI on the season.

In his 47 games with San Antonio this year, the 24-year-old outfielder is hitting .237 (41-for-173) with five doubles, a team-high, tying two triples, three homers, 10 RBI, 13 runs scored and four steals.

San Diego signed Asencio as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2009. In 131 games last season between High-A Lake Elsinore and San Antonio, Asencio hit .277 (148-for-534) with 35 doubles, five triples, seven homers, 76 RBI, 59 runs scored and four steals. The Dominican Republic native was selected to the World Roster of the 2013 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field in New York.
