8 Springfield Cardinals added to 40-Man Roster

November 20, 2009

Springfield, MO - The St. Louis Cardinals promoted eight minor-league players to their major-league roster, therefore making them ineligible in next month's Major League Draft. All eight players have spent time on the Springfield Cardinals roster.

Outfielders Allen Craig (07, 08), Jon Jay (07) and Daryl Jones (08,09) were added along with catcher Bryan Anderson (07), first baseman Mark Hamilton (07,08,09), starting pitcher Adam Ottavino (08 ) and relievers Francisco Samuel (09) and St. Louis native Tyler Norrick (09). The additions leave the Cardinals with 34 players on the major-league roster, leaving six vacancies to allow for further moves.

Craig, last season's organization player of the year, was a non-roster invitee to spring training last February before crushing 26 home runs with 83 RBI and a .322 average at Triple-A Memphis. Craig is expected to compete for a bench position in 2010 for the St. Louis Cardinals. Jay, Anderson, Ottavino and Samuel also appeared in major-league camp last spring. Jay is currently playing in the Venezuelan Winter League. Anderson and Jones are playing for Surprise in the Arizona Fall League.

DESCALSO DOUBLE-A ALL-STAR

Daniel Descalso was named a Topps Minor League Double-A All-Star. Descalso hit 26 doubles, five triples, eight home runs and batted .323 for the Springfield Cardinals. The second baseman's performance in 73 games for Springfield resulted in a promotion to Triple-A in early July. The St. Louis Cardinals selected Descalso in the third round in 2007 out of the University of California at Davis.
