May 30, 2014

Woodbridge, VA-The Washington Nationals have sent 3B Ryan Zimmerman to the Potomac Nationals for a rehabilitation assignment that continues ttoday at Pfitzner Stadium as the Nationals take on the defending Carolina League Champion, Salem Red Sox (Boston) at 1:05pm.

The length of Zimmerman's rehab stint with the P-Nats is to be determined, and this appearance serves as the fourth spell for the 10-year Major League veteran in a Potomac uniform during his professional career. The six-foot, three-inch, 220-pound "Face of the Franchise" previously joined the Potomac Nationals in the 2008, 2011, and 2013 seasons on rehab.

Zimmerman was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 13th after breaking his right thumb in a contest on April 11th at Turner Field against the Atlanta Braves. Zimmerman was picked off second base and in the process jammed the thumb on his throwing hand into the bag.

Zimmerman, 29, is a former 1st round selection (4th overall) of the Washington Nationals out of the University of Virginia in the 2005 MLB Draft. Furthermore, the right-handed slugger was in fact the first-ever draft pick of the Washington Nationals franchise.

The Washington, North Carolina native, was hitting .364 in 10 games this season for the Nats before his injury. Zimmerman has scored four times, ripped three doubles, cranked two home runs, and driven home six runs during the small sample size of his 2014 Big League season.

Zimmerman owned a lifetime .286 batting average entering the 2014 campaign and collected 179 home runs and 672 RBIs, while scoring 664 runs coming into the '14 ledger.

Zimmerman is a two-time National League Silver Slugger Award winner for his offensive prowess as a third baseman (2009 and 2010) and won a Rawlings® Gold Glove Award in '09, the same season in which he played in his first All-Star game.

Ryan Zimmerman is the Nationals' all-time leader in virtually every offensive category including games, runs, hits, times on base, doubles, home runs, extra-base hits, total bases, and runs batted in in addition to go-ahead and game-winning RBIs.
