May 31, 2014

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (MAY 31, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, took game two of the series 2-0 over the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday night. Andrew Faulkner took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed only two hits all night en route to his fourth win. Joey Gallo homered for the second straight day, his minor leading 21st home run, and Nick Williams had his 14-game hitting streak snapped.

Faulkner was brilliant on Saturday. He walked LeVon Washington to open the ballgame, and then retired the next 15 batters consecutively. James Roberts broke up Faulkner's no-hitter with an opposite field single to begin the sixth. It was one of only two hits that the Mudcats collected off of the Pelicans on the night. Faulkner walked only one, struck out seven, and tossed a season-high seven frames.

Myrtle Beach (36-17) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a scoreless frame from Faulkner in the top of the first. Chris Garia doubled to open the Pelicans night offensively. Two batters later Jorge Alfaro roped a double down the left field line to plate Garia and give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead over Carolina (23-30).

Joey Gallo added a run on solo home run in the fourth. The long ball was his third in two days. The Pelicans have homered in six straight games.

After Faulkner tossed seven scoreless, Will Lamb fanned three in a perfect eighth. He retired the first man of the ninth on strikes as well before walking two straight batters and exiting the ballgame. With the tying run at the plate, the Pelicans went to Abel De Los Santos. The right-hander then struck out Erik Gonzalez and got Anthony Gallas to fly out to deep left field to close it out.

De Los Santos (3) earned the save, making a winner out of Faulkner (4-0). Faulkner is the only qualifying Carolina League pitcher without a loss. Michael Peoples took the defeat (2-6).
