G-Braves Lose Obispo, Move Atkins
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves, in conjunction with the Atlanta Braves, announced two transactions affecting the 25-man roster today. Right-hander Wirfin Obispo, designated for assignment by Atlanta on May 31 to make room on the 40-man roster for right-hander Shae Simmons, was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Additionally, right-hander Mitch Atkins was transferred from Gwinnett to Double-A Mississippi.
Obispo, 29, was claimed by the Pirates on June 1 and has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis. The reliever went 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA in 19 games for the G-Braves this season.
Obispo was coming off a solid 2013 season with Gwinnett, when he went 2-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 54 relief appearances. He led the International League in appearances while finishing among G-Braves' team leaders in holds (T-1st, 7), saves (2nd, 9) and strikeouts (5th, 70). The Atlanta Braves added him to their 40-man roster in November, 2013.
In his 10-year minor league career, Obispo has posted a 15-18 mark with a 2.81 ERA and 12 saves in 136 appearances. He began his professional career as a shortstop in the Boston Red Sox organization, signing as an international free agent on January 20, 2002.
Atkins, 28, returns to Double-A Mississippi after spending all of 2013 with the M-Braves. The right-hander went 5-2 with a 3.47 ERA in 17 games, 16 starts last season. In 2014 with Gwinnett, he was 1-3 with a 4.72 ERA in 11 games, five starts.
The Gwinnett Braves and Rochester Red Wings meet in the finale of the four-game series on Monday night at Frontier Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Yunesky Maya 1-0, 3.06) will start for the G-Braves, while the Red Wings will counter with right-hander Alex Meyer (3-1, 3.31).
