Guaipe, Kohlscheen, Marte selected as Southern League All-Stars
JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 3, 2014) - Today the Southern League announced that Jackson Generals short stop Ketel Marte and right-handed relievers Stephen Kohlscheen and Mayckol Guaipe have been announced to the North Division All-Star team. Each will represent Jackson at the All-Star Game in Chattanooga at AT&T Field on June 17.
Marte, 20 is currently on a 9-game hitting streak, his fourth hitting streak of seven or more games this season. During the streak he is batting .350 (14x40) with seven runs scored, two doubles, a triple five RBI, and two stolen bases. He hit safely in 20 of 26 games in May, batting .291 (32x110) for the month with 12 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples, 11 RBI and eight stolen bases. His consistency at the plate has been stellar as he has hit safely in 40 of the 53 games he's played in this season. His 66 hits are tied for second in the league currently and his 15 doubles are tied for fourth. Ketel's average of .304 also has him ranked 10th among his competitors. Marte was signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent in 2010 and resides in Nizao, Dominican Republic.
Kohlscheen, 25 only had two save opportunities in May, but the Generals closer has not allowed an earned run in 16 of his last 20 relief appearances. Stephen is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA on the year and has saved four games in five opportunities. Among relievers he has the second lowest walks, per nine innings ratio at 1.29 per nine innings. Kohlscheen was Seattle's 45th round selection in the 2010 draft out of Auburn University. He resides in Norman, Oklahoma.
Guaipe, 23 is currently has a 1.85 ERA. He has saved four of the six opportunities which ranks him second on the team. Guaipe is 1-1, with 31 strikeouts and 7 walks, holding opponents to a .189 batting average.
He has not allowed a run in 16 of his 20 appearances and has not allowed a run in 6.0 consecutive innings. Guaipe is fourth among relievers in the league in batting average against as opponents are hitting just .190 against the right hander. He has been especially dominant against righties this season as they are only hitting .181 with 21 strikeouts. He is also fifth in the league in lowest walks per nine innings pitched at 1.86 and is second in the league in fewest base runners per nine innings at 8.53. The Venezuelan native was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mariners in October, 2006.
Kohlscheen, Guaipe and Marte will be making their first All-Star appearance in any level of their professional career. The game will be at AT&T Field in Chattanooga on June 17. It is scheduled to begin at 7:15 pm EST and can be seen on milb.tv.
