Truby to return to Cutters in 2010

Velandia & Carter added to staff
December 15, 2009
The Williamsport Crosscutters will be led by a familiar name next season. The Philadelphia Phillies announced today that Chris Truby will return to manage the team in 2010. It marks the first time that a Williamsport manager has returned for a second season since Tom Prince managed the Cutters in 2005 & 2006.

Truby led the Cutters to a 2nd place finish in the NY-P Pinckney Division in 2009 with a record of 42-34. He hit .323 in the New York-Penn League with Auburn in 1994 and spent parts of four seasons in the majors with Houston (2000-2001), Montreal (2002), Detroit (2002) and Tampa Bay (2003). As a major league rookie in 2000 he hit .260 with 11 home runs and 59 RBI.

Talking about his return to the Crosscutters Truby stated, "I am truly looking forward to returning to Williamsport in 2010. I enjoyed spending my first year as a manager there. The fans and the organization treated me well and I'm excited to come back for another season".

Joining Truby on the Crosscutters staff will be coach Jorge Velandia and pitching coach Lance Carter. Jon May and Aaron Eppler each return for their third year as trainer and strength & conditioning coach respectively.

Velandia, a native of Venezuela, was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 1992 as a free agent and made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres in 1997. A middle infielder, he played in a total of 174 games in the majors over parts of 8 seasons with San Diego, Oakland, NY Mets, Tampa Bay, Toronto, & Cleveland. He was signed by the Phillies as a minor league free agent in 2009 and played 10 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Carter was picked by the Kansas City Royals in the 21st round of the 1994 draft. He played parts of 6 seasons in the majors with Kansas City, Tampa Bay and LA Dodgers, compiling a record of 13-12, with 29 saves and a 4.15 ERA. As a reliever for Tampa Bay in 2003, Carter had a 7-5 record with 26 saves.

The Crosscutters open their 2010 season on June 18th hosting the rival State College Spikes at Bowman Field.
