Cy Young winner to coach in Yakima

December 17, 2009
On the same day that Seattle traded for a Cy Young pitcher, the Yakima Bears acquired one of their own. Of course, he will serve in a coaching capacity.

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today that Doug Drabek, 1990 National League Cy Young award winner, will be the pitching coach for the 2010 edition of the Yakima Bears. He will take over for last season's pitching coach Gil Heredia, who accepted a position with the Arizona affiliate in Missoula.

From 1986 through 1998, Drabek enjoyed a distinguished 13-season Major League career, during which he won 155 games, lost 134 and posted a stellar 3.73 earned run average.

Although he played for five different teams, Doug is most remembered for his tenure with the Pittsburgh Pirates, which included such teammates as Barry Bonds, Tim Wakefield, Bobby Bonilla, Jay Bell, and Andy Van Syke. Managed by Jim Leyland, that team won the National League East Division in 1990, 1991, and 1992.

Drabek's best year statistically was 1990, when he led the National League with 22 wins, with only a 2.76 ERA. In 1993, Doug left the Pirates for Houston, where he also enjoyed success. Drabek was named to the 1994 National League All-star team as a member of the Astros.

"I cannot express how excited we are to have a pitching coach with the stature of Doug Drabek" stated Bears' general manager, K.L. Wombacher. "After Mike Berger [Arizona's player development director] called me with the news, I had a big grin on my face. It is not often that a Cy Young winner comes to Washington, let alone Yakima."

Previously it was announced that manager Bob Didier and hitting coach Andy Abad would return for the 2010 season.

The Yakima Bears' open the 2010 season at Yakima County Stadium on Friday, June 18 against the Boise Hawks, a Chicago Cubs affiliate. Ticket packages for the upcoming season are now available at the Bears' office (17 N. 3rd Street, Yakima; 509-457-5151) or at www.yakimabears.com online.
