Thunder Can't Crack Squirrels 'Pen in 6-4 Loss

June 4, 2014

RICHMOND, VA - After clawing back from a couple of small deficits, Richmond's three-run 6th inning was enough breathing room down the stretch as the Flying Squirrels took Game 2 Wednesday night, 6-4.

With the game tied 3-3, Richmond put runners at second and third with one out when Manny Barreda struck out Kelby Tomlinson swinging to keep runners in scoring position with two outs. While Tyler Graham was at the plate, Barreda tossed a wild pitch that allowed Ricky Oropesa to score and give the Squirrels a 4-3 lead. Just a few pitches later, Graham stroked his second home run of the season for a 6-3 lead which was provided some comfort for the back end of the Richmond bullpen. The loss for the Thunder went to lefty Tyler Webb who allowed two runs in 1.0+ innings and drops his record to 1-3 on the season.

Before 4,239 fans, the Squirrels plated single runs in the first and third innings to spot starting pitcher Ty Blach with an early 2-0 lead. Leading off the second, Tyler Austin homered for the second time this season to cut the deficit in half, and then Peter O'Brien smacked a line drive home run to tie the game and tie with Joey Gallo (Myrtle Beach, High-A, Texas Rangers) for first place in all of Minor League Baseball with 21 homers.

Rob Refsnyder continued his hot hitting and went 2-for-4 and is now batting 42-for-101 (.416 AVG) since May 8th. O'Brien also had a single in addition to his solo homer, and was the other Thunder batter with a multi-hit game.

Bryan Mitchell made the start for Trenton and allowed three runs (two earned) in his fifth start of the season since coming off the Disabled List. Over four innings, he fanned four and needed 73 pitches to work through his outing which ended in a no-decision.

The Thunder get back to action Thursday for the rubber game of the three-game series at The Diamond. First pitch of Thursday's ballgame is 6:35 p.m. with the Trenton Thunder Pre-Game Show beginning at 6:20 p.m. which can be found on 91.3 FM and www.trentonthunder.com.
