Taylor May'd

June 5, 2014

Chicago White Sox prospect Taylor Thompson was lights out in the month of May. Thompson finished April with a 6.39 ERA in eight games with the Knights. His ERA has been cut in half (3.07) after a 0.61 ERA over nine games (14.2 IP) in the month of May.

This season Thompson did not allowed a hit in six consecutive appearances and only allowed one walk over the same stretch. From May 10th until June 1st Thompson threw 11.0 consecutive innings without a hit. He currently has a streak of 15.2 IP without run which began on May 6 and has spanned ten games.

The Auburn product had a similar streak last season with the Double-A Birmingham Barons when he threw 12.1 hitless innings May 5-27 (7 games). In May of 2013 Thompson went 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA and 16 K's in nine appearances (17 IP) with the Barons.

Thompson's best career month came in August of 2012 with the Winston-Salem Dash where he did not allow a run over the entire month (8 games/12.0 IP). His 0.00 ERA in August came after a solid July when he went 2-0 with a 0.59 ERA and 18 K's in 15.1 innings over 10 games that month. The 2012 season was highlighted by a streak of 16 consecutive scoreless games. The streak started on July 13th and ended on September 3rd after 24.1 innings when he gave up an RBI single in what would have been the 17th game of the streak, the run was unearned. Thompson totaled 29 K's over the final 17 games of the 2012 season with the Dash, which gave MiLB enough of a reason to name him to the Chicago White Sox organizational all-star team.

This season is Thompson's third stint with the Knights. The right-hander appeared in 12 games with the Knights last season totaling a 1-2 record with a 7.88 ERA over 16 innings of work. The Montgomery, Alabama native made his Triple-A debut with the Knights in 2009, the first season of his professional career. Thompson made two appearances with the Knights that season after being transferred from Rookie League Bristol.

If Thompson's remarkable May were to continue he could join the list of prospects to get the call to the Majors this season, the White Sox have called-up eight pitchers from Charlotte so far: RHP Jake Petricka (April 4), RHP Zach Putnam (April 17), RHP Andre Rienzo (April 19), LHP Charlie Leesman (April 22), RHP Scott Carroll (April 27), LHP Frank De Los Santos (May 3), RHP Frank Francisco (May 10), and RHP Javy Guerra (May 20) with only Leesman and De Los Santos returning to Charlotte. Chicago currently has the third highest team ERA in the American League and the fifth highest in Major League Baseball with 4.24. Taylor Thompson has yet to make his Major League debut.
