Jordan Walden to Rehab with Gwinnett
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Atlanta Braves have announced that right-hander Jordan Walden is scheduled make a minor league injury rehab appearance with the Gwinnett Braves tonight. He is expected to start and throw one inning during the G-Braves' 6:35 PM game against the Columbus Clippers at Coolray Field.
Walden, 26, has been on Atlanta's disabled list since May 10 with a strained left hamstring. Prior to the injury, he was 0-0 with a 2.92 ERA (4 ER in 12.1 IP) and one save in 14 relief appearances with the Braves. He held Major League opponents to a .178 batting average and allowed just one home run this season.
The rehab stint will be Walden's second with Gwinnett in two seasons. While recovering from right elbow inflammation last year, he threw 1.0 scoreless inning and struck out one in a relief outing on May 27, 2013 at Syracuse.
Walden is 12-11 with a 3.16 ERA and 36 saves over 187 games during his five-year Major League career. He was acquired by the Braves from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for former Gwinnett right-hander Tommy Hanson on November 30, 2012. Last season with Atlanta, he went 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA and one save in 50 relief appearances.
Walden will be the third Atlanta Braves player to spend a rehab assignment with Gwinnett this season, joining right-hander Gavin Floyd and left-hander Mike Minor. Floyd went 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA in five rehab starts in April while recovering from 2013 "Tommy John" surgery. Minor went 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA in two games, one start in April while recovering from left shoulder tendinitis.
The Gwinnett Braves and Columbus Clippers play game three of the four-game series tonight at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM. Walden is scheduled to start for the G-Braves, while the Clippers will counter with right-hander Tyler Cloyd (2-3, 4.91). Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call beginning at 6:20 PM on wdun.com, GwinnettBraves.com, Tune-In Radio and the MiLB First Pitch app.
