Knights Fall to Red Wings 13-4 in Friday's Finale
(Uptown Charlotte, NC) - 2013 International League MVP Chris Colabello launched a grand slam, Wilkin Ramirez homered twice, and the Rochester Red Wings beat the Charlotte Knights 13-4 on Friday in the finale of their four-day, five game series. The Knights welcomed 10,421 fans for their 16th sell-out crowd of the season on Friday and their second largest crowd ever at BB&T Ballpark.
The Red Wings put up 13 runs on 14 hits on the night and got off to a quick start in the game with help from Colabello, who launched a first inning grand slam off Charlotte starter Erik Johnson (1-6, 6.49). Johnson allowed seven runs on six hits over four innings and was saddled with the loss. He walked five batters and has now walked 13 batters over his last two games (9.0 innings pitched).
Jordan Danks continued his torrid pace in the month of June. Danks roped his fourth home run over his last three days - a solo shot in the second inning off Rochester starter Yohan Pino (8-1, 2.17). The home run for Danks was the 43rd in his Knights career - which is good for sixth all-time in franchise history. He's now just one away from tying Josh Fields for fifth all-time.
Matt Davidson hit his ninth home run of the season and finished the game 1-for-4 on the night. Catcher Josh Phegley went 1-for-5 at the plate and hit his eighth home run of the season. As a team, the Knights lead the International League in home runs with 64.
Reliever Ryan Kussmaul, who was promoted to Charlotte from Birmingham earlier on the day, threw three shutout innings. He struck-out five batters and did not allow a hit.
The Knights will now move on from their series with the Red Wings and open a four-game series with the Columbus Clippers (Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians) on Saturday at 7:05 PM. RHP Dylan Axelrod (2-5, 4.73) gets the start for the Knights in game one, while RHP Travis Banwart (3-2, 3.63) gets the nod for the Clippers.
