Padres draft Manziel in 28th round

Heisman Trophy winner played middle infield in high school
June 7, 2014

Conceding that signing him is "probably unlikely," the Padres on Saturday selected Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel in the 28th round of the First-Year Player Draft.

"You know, I heard he's a good player," Padres manager Bud Black told MLB.com. "I heard he was a good high school baseball player. I think he's a middle infielder. You can always use middle infielders. In most cases, they're the most athletic players on the diamond. Usually, they go to the outfield or stay in the middle."

After playing shortstop at Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas, Manziel went on to a spectacular football career at Texas A&M. In 2012, he led the Aggies to an 11-1 record and became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. Last month, the Browns selected him 22nd overall in the NFL draft.

Manziel took to Twitter to thank the Padres.

While Dee replied that Manziel was the "best athlete on the board," he admitted that the man dubbed "Johnny Football" is not likely to join the Padres.

"I would say in the near future, it's probably unlikely," Dee told MLB.com. "But if he ever put on a Padres' uniform, it would be great. Who knows what the future holds? You never know."

"[Johnny's] football career is certainly the priority, but you never know," general manager Josh Byrnes added. "It doesn't hurt to sort of formalize the relationship and see what happens."

Manziel's was not the only familiar name called on the final day of the Draft. The Yankees selected Mariano Rivera III, son of the future Hall of Fame closer, in the 29th round.
