Alonso Named Eastern League Player of the Week
Reading Fightin Phils infielder Carlos Alonso was announced as Player of the Week by the Eastern League on Monday afternoon for the period of June 2nd to June 8th. In that span of six games, he batted .480 (12-for-25) with four doubles, two homers, seven runs scored, three RBIs, four walks, and an .880 slugging percentage.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Alonso reached base in all six games last week and had multiple hits in four of those games. His week's outstanding performance was highlighted on last Tuesday where he went 4-for-5 with a home run and two doubles in Reading's 6-1 win at Harrisburg.
Among Eastern League batters, Alonso was the Eastern League leader in total bases (22) and runs scored (7) while tying for the lead in extra-base hits (6). He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in batting average (.480-2nd), hits (12-2nd), OPS (1.432-2nd), home runs (2-3rd), and walks (4-9th).
This season, Alonso is hitting .280 (59-for-209) with six home runs, 18 RBIs, and 39 runs scored in 54 games during his first season at the Double-A level.
Alonso was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 32nd round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Delaware. Last season with Clearwater, Alonso won the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for second basemen after posting a .996 fielding percentage in 117 games.
