Windle Strong in Quakes' Win Over Lancaster
Lancaster, CA - Quakes' starter Tom Windle helped the Quakes rebound from an ugly loss on Wednesday night, pitching seven scoreless frames in Rancho's 4-2 win over the JetHawks on Thursday evening.
Windle (5-4) allowed just three hits and one walk, striking out four batters over his seven innings of work.
Offensively, Aaron Miller continued his impressive run, as the reigning Cal League Player of the Week went deep for the second time in the series, putting the Quakes on the board in the second inning against Lancaster starter Mark Appel.
Appel (0-2) suffered his second loss to the Quakes this year, as he allowed four runs on six hits over just three innings. Rancho got him for four runs in the second, with Miller's eighth homer of the year coming before two-out run-scoring doubles from James Baldwin and Brandon Dixon, helping to give the Quakes an early 4-0 lead.
Coulombe followed Windle in the eighth and retired the first two men he faced, before walking Tony Kemp. That would bring Rob Rogers out of the bullpen, who needed just one pitch to retire Teoscar Hernandez to send the game to the ninth.
The ninth wasn't terribly kind to Rogers though, as he walked a pair of batters, then gave up a pair of two-out hits, as Conrad Gregor and Danry Vasquez each knocked in a run with an RBI single, making it 4-2. With the tying run on first and the winning run at the plate, Rogers came up big, ending the game by striking out Jordan Scott.
Rancho (31-37) will go with Fabio Martinez (4-3) on Friday evening, as he'll be opposed by Lancaster's Gonzalo Sanudo (0-0), with first pitch of game three of the series at 6:30pm.
The Quakes will return to LoanMart Field next Thursday, after a four-day All-Star Break.
