"The Candy Man" a winner as player and coach
January 24, 2010
Red Wings Hall of Famer Curtell Howard "Curt" Motton died on Thursday, January 21 at the age of 69. Motton was a star on the 1967 Red Wings club managed by Earl Weaver, and a coach on Rochester's 1988 Governors' Cup champions managed by Johnny Oates.

He was a popular coach, who became known as "The Candy Man" because he often threw pieces of candy to fans in the first base stands at Silver Stadium. Motton was inducted into the Red Wings Hall of Fame in 2006. His Red Wings Hall of Fame plaque reads:

Outfielder Curt Motton played parts of four seasons (1966, 1967, 1973 & 1974) with the Red Wings. He was the offensive catalyst for Earl Weaver’s 1967 Red Wings that finished second in the IL. Motton went on to play parts of eight seasons in the major leagues with the Orioles, Brewers and Angels. He was also Johnny Oates’ hitting coach when the Red Wings captured the 1988 Governors’ Cup. He endeared himself to fans at Silver Stadium as a coach by throwing candy into the stands on his way to the first base coaches’ box.
