Raptors Roster Released

Ogden Returns Seven Players for 2013
June 14, 2014

The Ogden Raptors announced their 2014 Opening Day roster on Saturday. This season will feature seven players from last year's squad.

The Raptors will carry a pitching staff of 16 hurlers. Right handers James Baune, Jose De Leon, Wascar Teodo and J.D. Underwood along with lefty Billy Flamion all return from 2013. Two top-10 2014 draftees will also be in the bullpen. Third-round pick John Richy from UNLV and sixth-round pick Brock Stewart will begin the season in Ogden.

Ogden will have three catchers behind the plate. Austin Cowen returns for his third season in Ogden. Julian Leon, who is from Hermosillo, Mexico, and Ryan Scott, a 30th round pick in the 2013 Draft out of Notre Dame (Ariz.) High School, are the other two catchers.

The Raptors will have nine infielders. First baseman Justin Chigbogu comes back to Ogden for another season. The former fourth-round pick was one of the best hitters on last season's team, slugging nine home runs and driving in 31 runs. Cody Bellinger will also spend time at first base. Bellinger was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 Draft and was named by Baseball America as the best defensive infielder in the Dodgers' system.

Ogden will field seven outfielders this season. Colin Hering (10th round), Devan Ahart (16th round) and Brian Wolfe (20th round) were selected by the Dodgers in this year's draft.

The Raptors also have a few new members on the coaching staff. 1993 American League Cy Young Award winner Jack McDowell will take over as the manager for the Raptors. He replaces Damon Berryhill, who has stayed within the Dodgers' organization and is the manager for Triple-A Albuquerque. Leo Garcia returns for his second season as the Raptors hitting coach. Garcia led the Raptors to a .291 batting average, second best in the Pioneer League. Also in his first season in Ogden is pitching coach Greg Sabat. Sabat was hired by the Dodgers last year as a minor league instructor and is taking over for Scott Radinsky, who is the pitching coach for Double-A Chattanooga.

The Raptors open the season against the Grand Junction Rockies on June 16 at Lindquist Field. The Raptors have right-hander Abdiel Velasquez taking the mound against righty Javier Palacios. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 and can be heard on 97.5 The Zone.
