Cubs Losing Streak Reaches Five
Sacramento, CA - The Sacramento River Cats (40-29) scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and beat the Iowa Cubs (33-33) 9-4 at Raley Field on Saturday night. The Cubs have lost a season-high five straight games after winning the opening game on this road trip.
Cubs' starter Tsuyoshi Wada scattered four hits and two walks over while holding the River Cats scoreless through the first four innings. The Cubs scored a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Matt Szczur, but the River Cats broke through in a big way in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Tyler Ladendorf belted a solo homer to tie the game. The Cats then loaded the bases with two hits and a walk. Wada walked Jose Martinez to force in the go-ahead run before the Cubs' turned to Alberto Cabrera out of the bullpen. Colin Walsh greeted Cabrera with a single to center field that drove in two, extending the River Cats' lead to 4-1. After a strikeout, the Cats added their final two runs of the rally when Arismendy Alcantara fielded a ground ball at shortstop, but threw wildly to first base for an error.
The River Cats added two more runs in the sixth when Nate Freiman smashed a two-run homer off Cabrera for an 8-1 lead. It was Freiman's second home run of the series and his 11th of the year.
The Cubs rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth against the River Cats' bullpen. Jose Flores started the inning and gave up a leadoff homer to Luis Flores. It was the catchers' second home run of the season. The Cubs loaded the bases on a hit and two walks and added a second run as Javy Baez grounded into a double play. Chris Valaika drove in the final run with a two-out single.
River Cats' starter Dan Straily (4-1) worked seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out nine to earn the win. Wada (6-4) walked a season-high four and suffered the loss in his shortest outing of the season at 4.2 innings.
The Cubs and River Cats continue this series on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM Central time. The Cubs will send RH Kyle Hendricks (6-5, 3.89) to the mound against RH Josh Lindblom (3-3, 6.50) for the River Cats.
