RailRiders outslug Hens in 8-7 thriller

June 17, 2014

The Mud Hens took a one-run lead into the ninth inning but a familiar face in Scott Sizemore ruined the day with a two-RBI single to give Scranton-Wilkes Barre the 8-7 win. Hens reliever Kevin Whelan was tagged with his second blown save of the year.

Toledo kicked off the scoring with a four-run barrage in the bottom of the second inning highlighted by Danny Worth's first triple of the season.

The RailRiders answered back with a run in the top of the fifth and three more an inning later to tie the game up at 4-4.

James McCann broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double to right field to score Hernan Perez. The Hens would add another run thanks to a wild pitch from Scranton-WB reliever Jim Miller.

The RailRiders tied it up again with an Austin Romine homer in the sixth inning but Ben Guez blasted his seventh homer of the year to give the Hens their one-run lead heading to the ninth.

Scranton-WB took advantage of a poor outing from Whelan and capitalized with on Sizemore's single to clinch the win.

Toledo starter Robbie Ray gave up six runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Robert Coello picked up his second win of the season for the RailRiders.

The Hens and RailRiders will continue their series at Fifth Third Field on Wednesday with first pitch slated for 7 p.m.
