Amateur State Games Set for Thursday at BB&T Ballpark
(Uptown Charlotte, NC) - Starting at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19th, BB&T Ballpark will play host to the 2014 Amateur State Games of North Carolina. This is the 28th year for North Carolina's premier high school baseball event and BB&T Ballpark will host four games on Thursday as the tournament makes its way through three sites around the Charlotte area (Hopewell High School and UNC Charlotte are the others).
"We are very pleased to be able to host a community baseball event at our new home," said Charlotte Knights Chief Operating Officer Dan Rajkowski. "We have always had a vision for BB&T Ballpark to be a community-wide ballpark and it's events like this that help us bring the region together."
The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority and the Knights teamed up to arrange for the games, featuring the top high school-age baseball players in the state, to be played in BB&T Ballpark the day before the White Sox Triple-A affiliate starts an eight-game homestand.
Each year 32 high school coaches volunteer their time to hold tryouts in their regions and then select the 20 best players from the region. State Games coaches rotate up until they are the head coach and new coaches are added to every team each year. This rotation ensures that all coaches, all schools, and all geographic areas of the state have the opportunity to participate in the Amateur State Games. The Amateur State Games Underclassmen tournament is a four-game, round-robin competition.
