LA's Elbert Loses in Rehab Start
Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed pitcher Scott Elbert started Wednesday's game for the Ogden Raptors against the Grand Junction Rockies at Lindquist Field in a rehab stint. However, he and the Raptors couldn't stop the Rockies in a 14-3 loss.
Elbert (0-1) was on a pitch count of 20, but it was pitch No. 20 that put Grand Junction ahead. In the first inning, Terry McClure walked and stole second. An Omar Carrizalez infield single put runners on the corners. It looked like Elbert might get out of the jam after a strikeout and a flyout kept the runners on the corners, but Hamlet Marte hit Elbert's 20th pitch out to left field for a three-run homer.
The Rockies put the game out of reach with big inning in the fifth. Already up 4-0, Grand Junction put up nine runs in the inning. Randy Reyes hit a grand slam after three straight singles. Two batters later, Wilson Soriano hit a two run home run down the left-field line. The Raptors committed three errors later in the inning, leading to three unearned runs and putting the Rockies up 13-0.
The Raptors, who had just one hit through eight innings, finally got on the board in the ninth. Brian Wolfe scored on a double from Ryan Scott, and Justin Chigbogu hit his first home run of the season to account for the Raptors' three runs.
Rockies starter Carlos Polanco (1-0) was nearly unhittable Wednesday night. The right-hander pitched six shutout innings, allowing just a sixth-inning single to Devan Ahart. The Dominican Republic native struck out nine batters and walked three in the win.
The Raptors and Rockies will finish their four-game series with a doubleheader Thursday. Bernardo Reyes and lefty Victor Gonzalez will pitch for Ogden against Craig Schlitter and Tony Bryant for Grand Junction. The games start at 5:30 and can be heard on 97.5 The Zone.
