8th Annual Essay Contest Open to 7th and 8th Graders
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals and Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn are pleased to announce the kick-off of the eighth annual "Why I Want to Go to College" essay contest. The contest is open to all 7th and 8th grade students residing in and outside of Nebraska.
The essay should be no more than 750 words and should articulate the student's goals and dreams for the future. Each essay, along with the required cover sheet, must be post-marked by Monday, April 19th and mailed to: The Omaha Royals, Attn: Diann Spataro, 1202 Bert Murphy Ave., Omaha, NE 68107.
A 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner will be selected from each of Nebraska's three congressional districts. Those winners will receive $1,000, $500 and $300 respectively towards one of Nebraska's College Savings Plans. Each winner also gets four tickets to the Nebraska vs. Creighton baseball game on Tuesday, May 18th at Rosenblatt Stadium and four passes to the Henry Doorly Zoo. The 1st place winner will also be treated to a one night stay at a premier Omaha hotel.
Out-of-state winners will receive prizes of $1,000, $500 and $300 towards one of Nebraska's College Savings Plans for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Prizes are courtesy of the Omaha Royals and the Nebraska State Treasurer's Office.

The Royals open their 2010 season at Rosenblatt Stadium on Thursday, April 8th at 7:05 p.m. facing the Memphis Redbirds. 2010 season tickets, mini-plans and other ticket packages are currently on sale, with single-game tickets going on sale Saturday, March 13. ABOUT THE ROYALS: For the second year in a row, readers of Omaha Magazine voted the Omaha Royals as Best Omaha Sports Team in the magazine's 18th annual Best of Omaha Awards, published in its January/February 2010 edition. 371,046 fans attended Omaha Royals games in 2009, making the Royals the largest-drawing sports team or event in the metro area last year. The team's total attendance, as well as the average of 5,457 fans per game, marked its largest figures since the 2000 season. Omaha's Triple-A franchise has drawn over 300,000 fans a year to Rosenblatt Stadium for 22 consecutive seasons, dating back to 1988.
