Sue Frauendiener makes history as Volcanoes' two millionth fan
KEIZER, Ore. - Sue Frauendiener has been a season ticket holder at Volcanoes Stadium since the inaugural season in 1997. She has seen countless games from her seats in section 109, including all five home games thus far in the 2014 season.
Little did she realize that she would become a part of Volcanoes' history as she walked through the gates on Saturday night.
Walking into Volcanoes Stadium with six of her family members just 20 minutes before first pitch, Frauendiener became the two millionth fan in the team's 18-year history.
"I actually was running late so I figured it would be over by the time I got here," Frauendiener said. I knew it was coming up because they announced it on Tuesday when I was here and then I saw it in the paper this morning. So I thought it would already be over with, and we would just go in and sit in our seats and it would be fun."
Sirens from a Keizer Fire Department vehicle went off as Frauendiener entered Volcanoes Stadium. She was greeted by Tom Leip, the president of business operations for the Volcanoes, who handed her a two millionth fan jersey.
"I heard the siren go off and I thought [the officer] had a call and wondered where he was going. I saw [Tom] walking towards me and thought 'oh no way'," she said laughing. "I was totally surprised."
The excitement didn't end there. Frauendiener was escorted down onto the field where she threw the ceremonial first pitch in front of a crowd of 2,776. She also got the chance to meet Mike Witenberger and Don Ferschwiler, the first and one millionth fans in Volcanoes franchise history.
"It was amazing. I can't describe things right now. I'm just so surprised that I was the two millionth fan. It's totally amazing."
She wrapped up her evening with a radio interview in the press box, and a trip up to the sky box suites to take in the game with Volcanoes owner Jerry Walker.
In addition to the game day experience that Frauendiener enjoyed, she was presented with a baseball autographed by the entire Salem-Keizer Volcanoes team. She left Volcanoes Stadium with a smile on her face, as the Volcanoes came from behind in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Everett AquaSox 3-2.
"This has been so exciting," Frauendiener said. "I will remember it."
