Beck Promoted to Charlotte, Will Start Tonight
(Uptown Charlotte, NC) - RHP Chris Beck, who is ranked as the ninth-best prospect in the Chicago White Sox system by Baseball America, has been promoted to the Charlotte Knights today. The 23-year-old will make his Triple-A debut tonight as he starts game three of Charlotte's four-game series against the Louisville Bats. Beck takes the roster spot of LHP Eric Surkamp, who was recalled to Chicago earlier today.
A native of Commerce, GA, Beck is 3-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 15 starts for the Double-A Birmingham Barons this season. In his last start of the year, which came back on June 20 at Jacksonville, the Georgia Southern University product struck-out seven batters over seven innings. He's tied for the Southern League lead in complete games (1), and is tied for second in games started (15).
Originally selected by the White Sox in the second round of the 2012 draft, Beck combined to post a 13-10 mark with a 3.07 ERA in 26 starts last season between Winston-Salem (A+) and Birmingham (AA). He tied for the Carolina League lead in wins (11), and ranked fifth in ERA (3.11). Overall, he went 11-8 with a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts for the Dash, and 2-2 with a 2.89 ERA in five starts for the Barons last season.
Gates open at 6:00 p.m. tonight as the Knights host the Bats at 7:05 p.m. Beck will be opposed by former Major Leaguer Chien-Ming Wang (7-5, 3.76), who is on the mound for the Louisville Bats tonight. Wang won 19 games in back-to-back seasons for the New York Yankees (2006-07).
