Isotopes Outlasted 6-3 By Aces In 14 Innings
NEED TO KNOW: It took 14 innings to decide a winner, but in the end, the Albuquerque Isotopes (35-44) were outlasted 6-3 by the Reno Aces (45-37) at Isotopes Park Thursday night.
CRITICAL MOMENT: After the Isotopes scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie it at three, both offenses fell silent. Reno finally broke through with back-to-back singles to leadoff the top of the 14th inning. A groundout and an intentional walk brought Danny Dorn to the plate. He singled in one to break the tie, and Argenis Diaz then doubled in two more to extend the Aces' lead to 6-3.
IBARRA, SAY IT ISN'T SO: Shortstop Walter Ibarra was hitless when he stepped to the plate with two outs in the ninth innings. After working a 2-1 count, the left-handed hitting Ibarra smashed a game-tying solo home run into the Aces bullpen and send the game into extra innings. It was only his third homer of the season.
FALLING BEHIND EARLY: Albuquerque fell behind 2-0 in the first inning Thursday night. The Isotopes have struggled early in games all season and have given up 129 runs in the first two innings alone, while scoring only 90 for a minus-39 run differential. In innings three through nine, the Topes have scored 295 runs and only given up 292 for a plus-3 differential.
BCG'S HOMECOMING: Albuquerque native and former University of New Mexico Lobo Brian Cavazos-Galvez was added to the Isotopes roster prior to the game and recorded a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning. Although he was on the Topes' Opening Day roster, he was sent to Double-A before playing a game at Isotopes Park this season. Cavazos-Galvez played 57 games for the Isotopes in 2012, recording a .354 batting average with 11 doubles, three triples seven homers and 32 RBI.
FEDEX DELIVERY: Catcher Tim Federowicz has been on a tear since rejoining the Isotopes on June 16. After a 1-for-5 evening with the Topes' first two RBI of the game, he is now batting .333 (12-for-36) with four home runs, two doubles, 10 RBI and eight runs scored.
ARRUEBARRENA KEEPS HITTING: Shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the ninth. He finished the game 1-for-3 with one run scored and three walks. During his streak, he has eight multi-hit games and is batting .435 (20-for-46) with two doubles, one triple, five runs scored and six RBI.
LAKER GIRLS AND FIREWORKS FRIDAY NIGHT: The Los Angeles Laker Girls will be on hand to sign autographs and perform during Friday's doubleheader, and following the second game, there will be a fireworks show. All brought to you courtesy of Brad Francis All-American Auto-Mall.
ON DECK: The Isotopes and Aces will play games two and three of their five-game series in a Friday doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Carlos Frias (5-4, 5.10 ERA) will get the start for Albuquerque, while Reno will go with righty Trevor Cahill (0-1, 6.14 ERA). Both teams are undecided on a starter for game two.
IN THE HOLE: After a brief five-game, four-day homestand, the Isotopes will trek to El Paso for a four-game series with the Chihuahuas before returned to Albuquerque for a July 4 showdown with the division-leading Las Vegas 51's.
