Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins
vs.
Norfolk Tides (32-50)
Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles
GAME TIME: 7:05 p.m.
SERIES: First game series
PREVIEW:
The Rochester Red Wings welcome the Norfolk Tides (Orioles) to Frontier Field for the start of a four-game set, Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
Rochester is coming off a 3-5 road trip including an eighth inning comeback win in the finale at Lehigh Valley to win, 6-5.
The Wings RHP Alex Meyer (4-4, 3.79 ERA) will be making his 16th start as he looks to rebound from his last three outing as he has not surpassed the fourth inning in his previous three start. The Greensburg, Indiana native has pitched to a 0-2 record with a 7.27 ERA in his last three starts. Meyer has fared, better at Frontier Field vs. on the road as Meyer is 3-2 with a 3.44 ERA at home, while holding a 1-2 record and 4.15 ERA in away games. The righty will be facing the Tides for the first time in his career.
Rochester has the second best team batting average (.269) in the International League and will be matched up against Norfolk's (4.91 ERA) IL worst pitching staff as the Tides send lefty Chris Jones (4-5, 4.42 ERA) to the mound. Jones has 23 appearances this season and will be making only his 4th start of year against the Wings. The left-hander is 1-2 with a 4.20 ERA in his three starts. In 5 1/3 career innings (3 games) vs. the Wings, Jones has not allowed a run.
Friday night, Rochester used a four-run, two-out rally, to stake the late inning comeback. Eric Farris doubled with one out to ignite the rally, before Chris Collabelo's two-out single with runners on the corners chased home Farris. Chris Herrmann than coaxed a walk to load the bases for Brad Nelson. Nelson promptly connected for his biggest hit of the season, lacing the first pitch he saw into the left-center field gap, clearing the bases and giving the Wings their first lead of the series. The relief duo of Aaron Thompson and Ryan Pressly worked a perfect eighth and ninth inning, respectively. The save for Pressly was his fourth in five chances this season.
Sean Gilmartin made his third start of the season for Rochester allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. Gilmartin yielded a two-run homer to Sebastian Valle in the second inning that gave Lehigh Valley a 3-0 lead. The southpaw has now allowed one home run in each of his first three starts with the Wings after surrendering only two in 12 starts at Double-A.
Friday's win was just the third this season for Rochester when trailing after seven innings (3-32).
