Hooks Drill Tulsa

TULSA - The Hooks scored five times thru the first two frames Saturday night en route to a 10-3 rout of Tulsa during the series opener ONEOK Field.

Tommy Shirley seized the run support and retired the first nine men he faced. Shirley (6-3) allowed two hits and one walk over five innings. The lefty fanned six and threw 47 of 70 pitches for strikes.

In the first, Delino DeShields, Jr., singled and stole second and third. Jonathan Meyer and Leo Heras followed with two-out walks courtesy of Ryan Kulik. With the bases loaded, Jio Mier sent a 1-1 pitch up the middle for a two-run single and a 2-0 Hooks lead.

Ruben Sosa laid down a bunt base hit with one out in the second. Following a walk to Tony Kemp, DeShields stroked a two-run double to left field, doubling Corpus Christi's advantage. A two-out single by Heras made it 5-0 Corpus Christi.

Kulik (0-1) settled down to retire seven in a row before a base hit by Meyer opened the fifth. Heras was next and belted a double to the gap in right-center, scoring Meyer from first base. Two outs later, Telvin Nash seared a line drive into left field, handing the Hooks a 7-0 bulge.

Corpus Christi (4-6, 38-42) tied its season-high with 15 hits on the night. DeShields owned three and accounted for three of the club's five stolen bases. Heras drove in three and swiped two bags. Kemp went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple, a walk and two runs scored.

Kyle Smith allowed three runs on four hits, including a lead-off home run by Ryan Casteel in the seventh. Smith walked one and fanned six in three innings of work.

Mitchell Lambson struck out two in a scoreless ninth.

Jon Gray (7-3) heads to the hill for Tulsa (4-6, 42-37) in Sunday's 2:05 matinee. Corpus Christi counters with lefty Luis Cruz (5-5).
