Renegades Score Five Late, Take 9-4 Win

June 29, 2014

Aberdeen, MD- The Aberdeen IronBirds climbed back from an early 4-0 hole, but the Hudson Valley Renegades scored five unanswered runs to take a 9-4 victory and the series sweep.

Things got off to a hairy start for IronBirds' RHP Nick Cunningham. CF Bralin Jackson started the game with a leadoff single that bounced off of Cunninham's shoe. After a fly out to left field, Cunningham walked 1B Casey Gillaspie, which was followed by a C Mac James single that got past a diving 3B Riley Palmer. With the bases loaded, DH Hunter Lockwood hit a grand slam to give the Renegades an early 4-0 lead. Cunningham then managed to get out of the inning without taking any more damage.

With the first inning behind him, Cunningham calmed down and pitched well for the next several innings.

The IronBirds offense got going in the bottom of the third thanks to a 2B Jemile Weeks leadoff double that was inches away from clearing the right field wall. Then SS Justin Viele hit a sacrifice bunt, moving Weeks to third. After a DH Steve Wilkerson walk, RHP Hunter Wood threw a wild pitch to 1B Hector Veloz that allowed Weeks to make it home and Wilkerson to advance to second. Veloz then hit a hard liner to left that bounced off of LF Clayton Henning's glove and allowed Wilkerson to make it home from second. Despite Veloz getting to third after a RF Oswill Lartiguez ground out, the IronBirds would end the inning without any more runs.

That two-run inning was the first time the IronBirds had scored a run since the sixth inning of their 6-2 loss at Brooklyn on June 26; they went 23.1 innings without scoring.

After another good inning of pitching from Cunningham, the IronBirds almost got on the board again in the fourth. CF Jay Gonzalez hit a two out double to the corner of left field, which was the first of his IronBird career as well as his first hit since June 16th. Then with Weeks at the plate, James made a throwing error trying to get Gonzalez at second, but overthrew it and let Gonzalez get to third. After Weeks walked, SS Justin Viele stepped up and grounded out to end the inning, leaving Gonzalez and Weeks stranded at third at first, respectively.

Cunningham was tested again in the top of fifth. After getting two quick outs, Cunningham walked 2B Jace Conrad, and then gave up a double to left field to Gillaspie, which moved Conrad to third. Cunningham then forced James into a slow grounder to the mound to get out of the inning without giving up a run.

The IronBirds got on the board again in the bottom of the sixth. LHP Darren Fischer came in to relieve Hunter Wood. After forcing 3B Riley Palmer into a ground out, Fischer walked LF Tad Gold. Jay Gonzalez then hit his second double of the night, moving Gold to third. Then with Weeks at the plate, Fischer threw a wild pitch that let Gold score. Fischer then walked Weeks and forced Viele into a groundout, but not before Gonzalez scored and Weeks moved to second. Wilkerson then grounded out to second to end the inning with the game tied at 4-4.

The Renegades got another four runs in the top of the eighth. Crichton started the inning by walking James and then gave up a single to Lockwood, but James was thrown out at second. With Blanchard up, Crichton threw a wild pitch that allowed Lockwood to get to second. Blanchard then singled, helping Lockwood get to third. Henning then came up and singled, scoring Lockwood. With RF Elias Torres up, Henning and Blanchard stole second and third, respectively, before Torres lined out to first. Then Sole stepped up and hit a two-run double, scoring Henning and Blanchard. With Sole at second, Jackson hit a single to right field that allowed Sole to get home. Crichton was then pulled in favor of Dariel Delgado who got the final out in the inning.

The Renegades would get one more run in the top of the ninth to finish off the IronBirds 9-4.

The IronBirds fall to 1-16 on the season while the Renegades move up to a McNamara Division-best 12-5.

RHP Ely Echarry (1-1, 7.20) earned the win while Crichton (1-3, 6.39) suffered the loss. The IronBirds have an off day tomorrow before welcoming in the Staten Island Yankees for three games beginning Tuesday night.
