Spikes to wear, auction patriotic caps this weekend

"Stars & Stripes" Caps to be worn on the 4th, auctioned on Sunday
July 1, 2014

The State College Spikes will join 112 other Minor League Baseball teams in wearing special "Stars & Stripes" caps this Fourth of July weekend to raise funds and awareness for veterans. The Spikes' caps will be up for bids in a Hat-off-the-Head Auction on Sunday, July 6th at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Future St. Louis Cardinals stars will wear the caps, created by New Era Cap Company, during the Spikes' 1 p.m. home game on the Fourth of July against the Jamestown Jammers (Pittsburgh Pirates). The Spikes will then auction off the caps on Sunday, July 6, when they face the Jammers at 6:05 p.m. as part of Military Appreciation Night at the park, presented by Beer Belly's.

During Sunday's game, fans can bid on each Spike's cap through the sixth inning, with the winners receiving their caps immediately after the game.

Several of the Spikes' "Stars & Stripes" caps will also be on sale at the Off the Rack Outfitters team store throughout the Fourth of July Weekend. Minor League Baseball, in conjunction with its licensing partner Major League Baseball Properties, will once again donate 100 percent of the proceeds from cap sales to Welcome Back Veterans, an organizations dedicated to addressing the ongoing needs of military personnel and their families. Since the program's inception in 2010, MiLB has contributed annually to the veterans' organization.

"As Minor League Baseball fans gather this Fourth of July weekend to celebrate America's birthday, we will also take time to honor and thank all the members of our armed forces for their service to our country," said Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O'Conner. "The Stars & Stripes cap program is one way we are showing our commitment to our military and an organization whose mission is to provide treatment to our veterans and their families. It's a small token of appreciation for the sacrifices they make every day."

The Spikes' Hat-off-the-Head Auction is a part of a busy Fourth of July Weekend at the ballpark. Fans will enjoy a 4 for $44 Friday on Independence Day, presented by TGI Fridays and MAJIC 99, with four Diamond Club seats, four hot dogs and four small sodas available for just $44, and additional packages available for $11 each.

Plus, the first 100 kids aged 12 and under to visit Geisinger Careworks locations at the Weis Plaza in Bellefonte or the Best Buy Plaza in State College will also receive FREE tickets on a Geisinger Careworks Kids FREE Friday.

Saturday, the Spikes and Jammers meet at 7:05 p.m., with the first 1,000 fans of all ages receiving a Spikes Hat Giveaway presented by Lion Country Kia. Fans can also enter into the drawing for the Lion Country Kia Dice Roll that will allow one fan to roll for the chance at a new Kia.

Sunday is Military Appreciation Night at the park, presented by Beer Belly's, with FIREWORKS after the game presented by the PA Lottery and ESPN Radio 1450. It's also a Kids Day at the park, presented by First National Bank, with kids able to eat and play for free thanks to Dairy Queen Grill & Chill.

Kids can run the bases after all three home games thanks to Clinical Outcomes Group, Inc.
