BayBears Moves: Samson to Mobile Completes Busy June

BayBears made 14 roster moves in June, highlighted by outfielder David Peralta's MLB debut and RHP Archie Bradley's return to Mobile.

MOBILE, AL -- The Mobile BayBears and Arizona Diamondbacks have announced that on Monday, June 30, 2014, infielder Nate Samson has been signed to a one-year minor league contract and assigned to Double-A Mobile. Samson joins the BayBears on their current road trip in Jackson, Tennessee.

 

The final roster move of the month completes a June in which the Arizona Diamondbacks made 14 total transactions that directly affected the BayBears.

 

On June 1, the Diamondbacks and BayBears announced that outfielder David Peralta had his contract purchased from the D-backs and Peralta made his Major League Debut in Arizona that afternoon. The Carabobo, Venezuela native recorded his first two Big League hits in four trips to the plate. Voted a 2014 Southern League All-Star, Peralta is batting .301 with two home runs and seven RBI in 93 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks this season.

 

In a corresponding move to Peralta's promotion, outfielder Evan Marzilli was transferred from Advanced Single-A Visalia to Double-A Mobile. After batting .244 with five homers and 18 RBI in 52 games with the Rawhide, Marzilli is batting .310 with one home run and 12 RBI in 25 games with the BayBears.

 

Infielder Mike Freeman was promoted to Triple-A Reno June 3. After batting .214 with five homers and 16 RBI in 52 games with Mobile, the Orlando, Florida native is batting .290 with one home run and 10 RBI in 25 games with the Aces.

 

Following Freeman's promotion, infielder Ryan Court was promoted from Visalia to Mobile. Court batted .272 with four homers and 21 RBI with the High-A affiliate of the Diamondbacks. In 16 games with the BayBears, Court is batting .242 with 2 RBI in 33 at-bats.

 

June 15, the Diamondbacks and BayBears announced that RHP Jake Barrett had been transferred from Double-A Mobile to Triple-A Reno. While with Mobile, Barrett was named a 2014 Southern League All-Star. In 25 games with the BayBears this season, Barrett was 1-2 with a 2.39 ERA, walking 12, striking out 24 and recording 12 saves. Barrett recorded his first career Triple-A save June 28 at Albuquerque.

 

Another BayBears reliever was promoted to Triple-A Reno when RHP Blake Cooper joined the Aces on June 21. Cooper represented Mobile in the Southern League All-Star this season after 3-2 mark with a 1.85 ERA in 24 appearances with the BayBears.

 

RHP Kyle Winkler was promoted from Visalia to Mobile to replace the vacant spot left by Cooper's promotion. After a 1-3 record with a 3.53 ERA in 23 games with the Rawhide, Winkler is now 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 6.2 innings of work with Mobile.

 

On June 26, RHP Archie Bradley, the Arizona Diamondbacks number one prospect according to Baseball America and MLB.com was activated from the Triple-A Reno Aces' Disabled List and transferred to Double-A Mobile. Bradley made his first start for the BayBears since the 2013 season where he was named the Southern League Player of the Year. In his first start off the DL, the D-backs top prospect allowed one earned run on three hits, walking four and striking out one in four innings on the mound.

 

On June 27, Outfielder Todd Glaesmann was promoted from Class A Hillsboro to Class AA Mobile. The Waco, Texas native batted .404 with two homers and 9 RBI in 14 games with Hillsboro. In just 11 at-bats with the BayBears, Glaesmann has notched four hits and tallied 4 RBI.

 

Also on June 27, RHP Mike Lee was transferred from Mobile to Triple-A Reno. In one start with the Aces, Lee suffered the a loss, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out two in 5.1 innings. The righty was transferred back to Mobile to the following day.

 

June 28, BayBears catcher Raywilly Gomez was promoted to Triple-A Reno after batting .273 with three home runs and 22 RBI in 55 games with Mobile. The following day, Gomez was subsequently traded to the Philadelphia Phillies and assigned to Double-A Reading.

 

Infielder Garrett Weber was promoted from Double-A Mobile to Triple Reno on June 29. Weber went 10-for-28 in his last 10 games with the BayBears before his promotion.

 

Samson was the final transaction in the month of June for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Mobile BayBears. Samson has spent parts of five seasons in the Southern League while a member of the Tennessee Smokies, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The Ocala, Florida native joins Mobile as a minor-league free agent. Samson began 2014 with the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association, an Independent League where he batted .335 with two homers ane 23 RBI.
