More Shutout Work From Guthrie in 5-0 Victory
Guthrie has now allowed runs in just one of the 28 innings he has thrown this year after he added five more shutout frames in a 5-0 victory over the Toledo Mud Hens, Tuesday evening from Fifth Third Field.
Guthrie had a six-game stint with the Cleveland Indians, but before and after that time, he has been lights out for the Herd. He allowed just two runs in 18 innings before the call up, both coming in the 4th inning of a start against Richmond on April 19. He returned to Buffalo on May 16 to throw five more shutout innings the following day against Pawtucket.
Tuesday was much of the same for the former #1 draft pick, as he made a big pitch every time he needed one to keep the Mud Hens off the board. Guthrie forced Toledo to leave eight men on base in his five innings of work to improve his record to 3-0.
The Mud Hens had the bases loaded in the 2nd and 3rd innings, but couldn't push across a run. Guthrie struck out Max St. Pierre to end the first threat before fanning Josh Phelps on four pitches to close out the 3rd.
Guthrie had the strikeout-pitch working all game. He punched out a season-high seven batters. He now has a 0.64ERA in five starts with the Herd this season.
Buffalo got the only runs they would need in the top of the 3rd inning. Newcomer Kelly Shoppach blasted the first pitch he saw from Toledo starter Colby Lewis to left field for a two-run homer. The no-doubter was Shoppach's first hit and home run as a Bison.
The Bisons made it 3-0 in the 6th inning thanks to a two-out double from Ryan Garko and an RBI-single from Jason Dubois. Garko then took the team lead in RBI away from Dubois with a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, in the 8th inning.
Danny Graves threw a pair of shutout innings in relief for the Herd. Vic Darensbourg struck out a pair in a scoreless 8th inning against his former team. Tom Mastny closed out the victory with a shutout 9th.
Quick turnaround for the Bisons and Mud Hens as Toledo will hold their annual School Kids Day, Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Jeremy Sowers will look for his fifth consecutive win against Jordan Tata. Don't miss Countdown to Bisons Baseball on WECK 1230 AM and WSPQ 1330 AM, starting at 10:10 a.m.
BISONS NOTES: Joe Inglett and Jake Gautreau were back in the lineup for the Herd. Inglett (0-4) was called up from Double-A Akron while Gautreau (1-4, R, 2B) was activated off the disabled list...Garko finished the game 3-4 with two runs and two RBI. It is Garko's second consecutive three-hit game...Garko now has 30RBI and Dubois has 29.
