HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:
Andrew Faulkner ('12-'13, P/ Myrtle Beach) improved to 8-1 on the season with five shutout innings on Friday as the Pelicans edged Lynchburg 2-1. He struck out five, walked two and allowed five hits.
BIRTHDAYS:
Brad Eldred ('03, 1B) turns 34. The native of Coconut Creek, FL was the sixth round pick of the Pirates in 2002 out of Florida International University. He batted .250 in 115 games with 22 doubles, 28 homers and 80 RBI. He is fourth in a single season in homers and eighth in strikeouts (142). Eldred made his big league debut with Pittsburgh on 7/22/05 and played there also in 2007. From then on, he became one of the biggest home run threats in the minor leagues and he led the International League with 38 in 2008. Eldred played briefly with Colorado in 2010 and Detroit in 2012 before going to Hiroshima, where he is in his third season.
Tom Gorzelanny ('04, P) turns 32. The native of Chicago, IL was the second round pick of the Pirates in 2003 out of the University of Kansas. The SAL all-star went 7-2 in 16 games (15 starts) for Hickory with one complete game and a 2.23 ERA. He struck out 106, walked 34, and allowed 30 runs (23 earned) on 63 hits. Gorzelanny made his major league debut with Pittsburgh on September 20, 2005. He went on to split much of the remainder of his Pirates career with Pittsburgh and AAA Indianapolis before a mid-season trade in 2009 moved him to the Chicago Cubs, where he played through 2010. Gorzelanny was traded during the off-season to Washington, where he pitched through 2012. He is now in his second season with Milwaukee.
Casey Shumaker ('02, P) turns 34. The native of Jacksonville, FL was the 23rd round pick of the Pirates in 2001 out of Jacksonville University. The closer for the 2002 SAL championship team went 4-4 with 22 saves and a 3.22 ERA in 47 games. In 58.2 innings, Shumaker struck out 83, walked 22, and allowed 28 runs (21 earned) on 53 hits. His 12.73 strikeouts per nine inning ratio is third best in club history (50 or more innings) and he is fourth in saves for Hickory. Shumaker pitched one more season at high-A Lynchburg before calling it quits.

Andrew McCutchen ('06, OF/ Pittsburgh) went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly, two runs scored, two RBI and stole two bases as the Pirates routed St. Louis 9-1.
BIRTHDAYS:
Hirotoshi Onaka ('12-'13, OF) turns 26. The native of Nishinomiya, Japan signed with the Rangers as an international free agent in 2010. He batted .195 in 28 games over two seasons with two doubles, two homes and 11 RBI. Onaka's first homer with Hickory gave the team the overall club record last season. He finished out last season with the AZL Rangers and was then released.

Joe Maloney ('12-'13, 1B/ Rockland) had a huge day during Can-Am League play for the Boulders. He went 5-for-5 with two homers (9), a double, four runs scored, four RBI and added a steal, as Rockland defeated Trois-Rivieres 15-1.
ALL-STAR SELECTIONS:
Jose Bautista ('02, 3B) was voted to start in the outfield for the American League. It will be his fifth straight All-Star Game and the fourth straight year he was voted in as a starter.
