Red Wings edge Bisons, 3-2

Late run decides pitcher's duel
July 8, 2014

Wilkin Ramirez drove home James Beresford in the eighth inning, giving the Rochester Red Wings a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons Tuesday night at Frontier Field. The series concludes Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m, with Logan Darnell facing former Wing Liam Hendriks.

Wings rookie right-hander Alex Meyer drew big league veteran Esmil Rogers as a mound opponent Tuesday, and Meyer struck out a pair while retiring the side in order. Rogers also had an easy first inning, needing just nine pitches to get the first three outs.

The Red Wings took the lead in the bottom of the third. After Rogers walked Pedro Florimon, Doug Bernier sent a ball off the face of the centerfield fence for a double that brought Florimon home.

Meyer collected his fifth and sixth of the game in the top of the fourth, once again getting out of the inning cleanly.

The Bisons got in scoring position in the top of the fifth though, when A.J. Jimenez led off with a single before Meyer walked the next two batters to load the bases for the Bisons with no outs. After Meyer struck out Jared Goedert, Ryan Goins registered his second hit in as many at-bats bringing home two runs to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead. The Wings then turned a sharp double play to get out of the inning.

The Wings answered with an offensive threat of their own in the bottom of the same frame. Florimon singled and Dan Rohlfing's base-hit moved Florimon to third. Then, for the second time in the game, Bernier brought Florimon home, this time tying the score 2-2.

Meyer walked Brad Glenn in the top of the sixth before Jimenez's hit struck the umpire, giving him an automatic base. Meyer's 10th strikeout of the evening ended the inning.

Deibinson Romero blasted a long ball to lead off the Wings' half of the sixth, but Bisons' center fielder Anthony Gose snagged it at the top of the wall to take away a home run.

Edgar Ibarra took the mound for the Wings in the top of the seventh, after Meyer yielded four hits and two runs in six innings and extended his league-best strikeout total to 103 on the season. Meyer threw 99 pitches, 59 for strikes.

In the Bisons' half of the eighth, Kevin Pillar led off with a hit but Ibarra picked him off on another steal attempt, Ibarra's second pick-off of the night.

The Wings mounted a threat against Rogers in the eighth. Beresford drilled a one-out double, and move to third base on an infield single by Romero. Ramirez lofted a flyball to Gose in center, deep enough for Beresford to tag up and slide home ahead of the throw to put the Wings ahead 2-1. That also marked Rogers' exit from the game, with Steve Delabar coming in to pitch. Rogers tossed 7 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs, walking two and striking out four. Rogers (2-2) threw 107 pitches, with 72 strikes.

Ryan Pressly worked the ninth inning, after Ibarra (4-0) allowed one hit and struck out one in two relief innings. Pressly gave up a lead-off single to Dan Johnson, but a double play quickly cleared the bases. Pressly struck out Aldridge to end the game and pick up his sixth save.

NOTES: The Twins placed Ricky Nolasco on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow on Tuesday, and reserve catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann was recalled from Triple-A Rochester. The Wings activated C Josmil Pinto from the disabled list.

This Day In Red Wings History
1976
- Rochester's sixteen game winning streak was snapped as the Wings lost 8-4 to Pawtucket in R.I. The winning streak was stopped three short of the all-time Wings record of 19, which was set in 1953. The string of wins gave Rochester a 5 game lead in the International league.

This Day In IL Baseball History
1998
- For the first time, the Triple-A All-Star Game is formatted to pit the International League All-Stars against the Pacific Coast League All-Stars, and the IL wins bragging rights by defeating the PCL squad 8-4 at Norfolk's Harbor Park. The International League jumps out to an early 3-0 lead sparked by a homer from Columbus' Mike Lowell in the bottom of the 1st. Starting pitcher Joel Bennett of Rochester tosses two scoreless innings to win the game, throwing for his actual manager Marv Foley. Tides' fans have more than just the game to cheer about, as their own outfielder Benny Agbayani is married on the field prior to the game.

It Happened This Day
1941 - Thanks to a dramatic two-out, bottom of the ninth inning, three-run home run by Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams, the American League All-Stars beat the NL in Detroit, 7-5. The "Splendid Splinter's" dramatic drive on a 1-1 pitch thrown by Claude Passeau off the right field press box makes the Briggs Stadium contest the first Mid-Summer Classic to be decided in the final inning.

2000 - The Yankees sweep their cross-town rivals in the first double-ballpark doubleheader since 1903 with identical scores, 4-2 in an afternoon tilt at Shea and 4-2 in an evening contest at Yankee Stadium. It proves to be quite an interesting day in New York as Mike Piazza is hospitalized after being beaned by Roger Clemens, Dwight Gooden gets his first win at the Flushing Meadow ballpark since 1994, and a bizarre obstruction call on Mets' first baseman Todd Zeile causes the first game to be played under protest.

2003 - Indians' southpaw Billy Traber one-hits the Yankees, retiring 27 of 28 batters, including 21 in a row after allowing John Flaherty to reach first base with a single in the third inning. The 4-0 blanking of the Bronx Bombers is the 23-year old rookie's first complete game.

2010 - With the Rockies' 4-3 victory over St. Louis, Ubaldo Jimenez became the first pitcher in ten years to record 15 wins prior to the All-Star break. The Colorado right-hander, who is has compiled a 15-1 mark, is the first hurler to reach the plateau since David Wells posted a 15-2 record with the Blue Jays in 200
